While the terms "management" and "leadership" are frequently applied interchangeably, they are actually two entirely distinct concepts. The former, however, is a broader term used to indicate the means of ensuring work is accomplished through communicating needs and specifics, monitoring the performance, directing the work and handling any particular aspects to issues that may negatively impact on productivity and/or output. The latter term refers to inspiring, encouraging and motivating others. Management specifically involves control over the staff at your disposal as well as possessing the authority to direct activities and behavior in the workplace environment. Those who work under a manager must do so whether or not it is their desire to do so. When it comes to being a leader, however, these notions are not applicable. It is, instead, the actual qualities or characteristics of someone that defines them as a leader. There is neither compulsion nor obligation to obey a leader. This applies equally to teams and individuals. Someone follows a leader because of a certain innate ability to draw them. These specific characteristics ensure others opt for the direction or means of thinking otherwise ignored or denied.
Only a very few managers are actually good leaders. Yet, many people can become leaders without ever being managers. It is possible for them to guide people, influence them and encourage them along the paths where they are sure to apply themselves to the best of their ability. In any shape or form, a good leader is a highly valuable commodity for any business or corporation. It is particularly important when it comes to such aspects as restructuring and organizational changes.
Change is a problem for many individuals. They find it hard to accept. This is true in all aspects of life, including work. If the work place was ideal, employees would gladly embrace any and all changes required to see that the company not only survives but thrives. Unfortunately, the reality is the polar opposite. Yet increasingly, as corporations and other businesses are becoming aware of and appreciate the inestimable worth of good leadership, they have begun to turn towards leadership coaching as a means of further developing the innate capabilities of this aspect of their operation.
