Mentored For Life

Expert Author Dan Giercke
I've come to the conclusion that we're all mentored in one way, shape or form throughout our lives. Many of us are unconscious of this mentoring, but it's happening regardless. If you think back to your school years, were your parents ever concerned about the type of kids you hung out with? Believe it or not, your peers were acting as mentors. The environment you surround yourself with will affect your decisions, actions and beliefs even on a subconscious level. We now know that within a few degrees, you are the average of the 5 people you associate most with.
Think about that for a second. Who are the 5 people you spend the most time with? If you were to add up all of their incomes and take an average, I'll bet your income would be the same (give or take a couple percent). You're also likely to have quality of relationships similar to the average of the 5, fitness level of their average, etc. Our environment influences our outcome. This is why finding mentors and role models who raise us up is so important.
If you have goals that you have not achieved, find someone who has and ask them to show you how they did it. You might be surprised how willing they may be to help you. Often we are intimidated by people we perceive as being more successful, or accomplished than us. And yet often the most successful people are also the ones most willing to share. They're looking for an opportunity to share their expertise. They likely had the guidance of a mentor themselves, so they're open to becoming one for someone else.
Whether you're looking to make your first million, get in shape, find your soul mate, travel the globe or any other goal, someone out there can show you how they did it. A mentor doesn't need to be someone you meet with on a regular basis. Mentors can take on many forms. You can read about someone's experiences in a book or autobiography. You can listen to an audio interview, or make a phone call. Of course you can always ask to take someone for coffee, lunch or dinner to ask them questions. Just make sure you pick up the bill!
There's an easy way to do something, and there's the hard way. Why not learn from the mistakes and experiences of others, and expedite your path to success with the help of a mentor.
